Block.one Launches Beyond Blockchain Hackathon: Combining the Power of Blockchain and Cloud
In partnership with Google Cloud, Galaxy Interactive, and Mythical Games, developers challenged to build next generation of innovative technologies

March 2, 2021 – Today Block.one opened its Beyond Blockchain hackathon, inviting developers to innovate on its flagship EOSIO protocol while deploying their applications on the scalable Google Cloud.
Blockchain technology’s inherent qualities of security, transparency and traceability have increasingly made it an integral part of everyday applications – from securing payments, proving provenance, verifying identity and making gaming more immersive. Participants will have the opportunity to interact with mentors across the blockchain ecosystem – including representatives from Block.one and Google Cloud. They will build applications that redefine the future of blockchain and cloud-based systems, fusing the transparency and integrity of blockchain with the speed and security of cloud solutions to bring about positive change to communities around the world.
Registration for the hackathon will remain open until the submission period ends on April 6, 2021 ET. Submissions will be judged based on the following criteria:
- Quality: How creative and original is your idea? What problem are you addressing?
- Implementation: How well did you execute the idea?
- Scalability: Does the idea bring a positive impact to communities? Can it be applied globally? How far can this idea reach?
- Use of Blockchain Technology: How important is blockchain to the solution? How was blockchain implemented in the app?
The winners will be announced on April 28, 2021, with first place receiving US$25,000 and US$12,500 in Google Cloud Platform credits.
Block.one’s Beyond Blockchain hackathon empowers developers to harness the speed, scalability and flexibility of the EOSIO network to build the applications needed to spark real-world change, while providing the framework to onboard newcomers to blockchain by offering a discovery platform that encourages exploration and creativity.
“There is real value in collaborating with community partners to develop solutions today that will withstand the demands of tomorrow,” said Bart Wyatt, Vice President of Blockchain Engineering at Block.one. “Neither blockchain nor cloud architectures will single handedly address all the legacy issues present in our existing infrastructure. By providing an opportunity for developers to freely iterate and explore new solutions, we have a chance to broaden the definition of what it means to be a blockchain developer, which in turn will expand the potential of blockchain applications and their positive impact on the world.”
Judges for the Beyond Blockchain hackathon include Google Developer Advocate Allen Day and Customer Engineer John Lee; Galaxy Interactive Principal Michael Fan; and Mythical Games SVP of Business Development Rudy Koch.
“We’re excited to see the creativity of our developer community unleashed on blockchain applications for gaming and across other verticals,” said Rob Martin, Chief Architect, Google Cloud for Games. “We see great potential for this technology, and there is no better form to explore the possibilities than a hackathon powered by cloud.”
